Zaui was still in its early growth stages with three employees when Brett came in almost ten years ago.
Zaui has since grown to become one of the leading companies offering booking management software for the Tourism Industry. And as the head of the development team, Brett has been a key player in Zaui’s tremendous growth.
Brett oversees the development team, continually adding cutting-edge features and delivering outstanding products for Zaui.
He knows how to tackle the hardest tech challenges and drive innovation. When it comes to leadership style, he always leads by example to be an active listener and supportive leader for his team.
What’s your favourite part about working as the Head of Engineering?
I love being able to work with the team to come up with creative solutions to problems. Our engineering team is full of talented people, and it’s fun to be able to work with them towards the common goal of improving our software.
What’s one thing that surprised you about working at Zaui?
How much the company has grown over the years. When I started, there were just 3 of us, and now we have almost 30.
It’s been a lot of fun to be a part of that growth and see the company expand to meet the demands of the market. It has been quite the journey, and I’ve been happy to help contribute to the growth and success of the software.

What is your favourite Zaui project and why?
My favourite Zaui project was definitely designing our system architecture when we migrated to the cloud. We wanted to make sure we could achieve high availability, and there were lots of considerations. There was a lot of research and planning involved in designing everything, and it was fun to see it all come together.

Your happiest moment at Zaui?
All of the company's social events have always been a lot of fun. We have always had a great team, and it’s really fun to connect with everyone outside of work. The highlight was definitely being flown in by helicopter for a weekend retreat at Lake Lovely Water!
What helps you feel connected to your coworkers while working remotely?
Frequent check-ins with our team members via slack and video calls help me stay connected. I sometimes feel more connected to people than when we were all in the office together since it’s easier to get in touch with everyone.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

Spending time outside. Riding my bike, skiing and camping with my family are my favourites.
What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
If the day is not going well, I usually just need to get out of the house to help clear my head, either for a bike ride or a walk on the beach with our dog.
What volunteering or passion projects do you do outside of work?
I’m currently involved with coaching mountain biking for youth groups. I’ve spent a couple of years building up my coaching certifications, and it’s fun to be able to apply it all.

What advice would you give to new Zauians in their first month?
Learn as much as you can about the software. There are many aspects to Zaui, and there are lots to learn. Make use of other team members as they are always happy to share their knowledge.

No. Zaui does not charge its commission on offline/manual bookings. “No fees on offline bookings” You only pay the commission when a booking is processed online through our system. Manual reservations (or bookings from partner channels we set up for you) incur no extra platform fee. (30% or less)
All of Zaui’s core features are included in your plan at no extra charge. We believe in value and transparency: Zaui provides over 15 advanced features (Google Things to do, reporting tools, marketing tools, reports, etc.) at no additional cost. Many competitors charge extra or require higher plans for the same features, but with Zaui you get the full suite of tools in one package. Any optional add-ons (if any) will always be clearly listed and optional there are no surprise paid upgrades for standard features.
